Heritage Preservation Commission

The City of Northfield Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) seeks to safeguard the heritage of Northfield by preserving sites and structure, which reflect elements of the city’s cultural, social, economic, political visual or architectural history. Additional goals of the commission include:

  • Protect and enhance the City of Northfield's appeal to residents, visitors and tourists, and serve as a support and stimulus to business and industry.
  • Foster civic pride in the beauty and notable accomplishments of the past.
  • Promote the preservation and continued use of historic sites and structures for the education and general welfare of the people of the City of Northfield.
The commission consists of nine members, eight of whom are appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. One member is appointed by the Northfield Historical Society. Each member serves a three-year term. There is no term limit. Members do not receive monetary compensation.

The Downtown Design Guidelines have been prepared to guide the HPC in their review of exterior building improvements, including signage.

HPC Project Plan Review Application
This application is required for any exterior improvements or changes to buildings located in the historic district.

Application and Membership Requirements

The Mayor recommends applicants to the City Council based on their interest in safeguarding the heritage of the City of Northfield (particularly the downtown historic district), along with willingness to serve and background.

Applications for the HPC are available by contacting the City of Northfield City Clerk at City Hall, 801 Washington Street.

Meetings

Meetings are scheduled on the third Thursday of the month; special meetings are occasionally called. For transaction of business at any meeting, five members constitute a quorum. It is desired that members make every attempt to be present at all meetings
