Registering to Vote

Before you can vote, you must register. In Minnesota, you may pre-register by 5 p.m. on the 21st day before Election Day or on Election Day at your polling place.  To be eligible to register and vote in Minnesota you must:

  • be at least 18 years old on Election Day
  • be a citizen of the United States
  • have resided in Minnesota for 20 days immediately preceding Election Day
  • have finished with all parts of any felony sentence
  • not be under court-ordered guardianship where a court has revoked your voting rights
  • not have been ruled legally incompetent by a court of law

Updating Your Registration
Your voter registration remains current until you change your residence, your name, or do not vote in four consecutive years. You may update your registration information by completing online voter registration or register by mail by completing a Voter Registration Application. Voters can check whether they are registered to vote by using the Secretary of State's Voter Registration Lookup Service.

Registering to Vote on Election Day

If you do not pre-register to vote, you can still register or update your registration on Election Day as long as you can provide proof of residence. You must provide one of the following proofs of residence when registering to vote on Election Day: 

  • A valid Minnesota driver’s license, Minnesota learner’s permit, Minnesota ID card, or receipt for any of these
  • A valid student ID card including your photo, if your college has provided a student housing list to election officials
  • A Tribal ID card that contains your name, address, photo and signature
  • A valid registration in the same precinct under a different name or address
  • A notice of late registration sent to you by your county auditor or city clerk
  • A voter registered in the same precinct as you who can confirm your address with a signed oath
  • An employee of the residential facility where you live who can confirm your address with a signed oath

                                                             OR

  • Both 1) a photo ID from the list below (that does not have your current address), and 2) a document from the list below with your current name and current address in the precinct.  

      Photo ID's (may be expired)

  • Driver's License, state ID card or learner's permit issued by any State
  • United States Passport
  • United States Military ID Card
  • Tribal ID Card with the name, signature and photo of the voter
  • Minnesota University, College, or Technical College ID Card
  • Minnesota High School ID card

 

   Accepted Documents (delivered electronically or by mail)

    • Bill, account or start of service statement due or dated within within 30 days of election day for:

    • Phone (landline, cell, VOIP, etc.)
    • TV (cable, satellite, etc.)
    • Internet services
    • Solid waste or sewer services
    • Electric, gas or water
    • Banking or credit card
    • Rent or mortgage payments 
  • Residential lease or rental agreement (must be valid through Election Day)
  • Current student fee statement
