Heritage Preservation in Northfield
Preserving Northfield's Heritage
One of downtown Northfield’s greatest resources is its unique concentration of historic buildings. The downtown Northfield Historic District comprises some 65 buildings in the commercial center of the city. The district was created by the City Council in 1978 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Current Projects
The Heritage Preservation Commission is currently working to create preservation guidelines for the closing and sale of the downtown United States Post Office.  These guidelines will be recommended to City Council and, if approved, will become the preservation covenants for the building. These covenants are not intended to restrict business, but to protect the historical integrity of the building.

As part of this process, the City Council authorized an appraisal of the building.  The appraisal, in addition to price, discusses possible uses and provides comparisons from other communities.

Sign Guidelines
Within the Downtwon Northfield Historic District, any exterior project, including signs for the exterior of a building, must be reviewed by the Heritage Preservation Commission prior to work starting.  You can find the necessary application and guidelines here.
