Library supporters are encouraged to make financial donations directly to the Northfield Public Library, or to the Friends and Foundation of the Northfield Public Library.

Books & Other Materials

Donations of books and other materials are accepted by the Northfield Public Library. The Library does not provide appraisals and does not accept materials that are not outright gifts.

All donations should be brought to the circulation desk. By law, we cannot determine the value of a donation for IRS purposes but we can issue a donation slip for tax purposes.

Donations That Are Accepted:

  • Books in good condition
  • Magazines newer than five years old
  • DVDs
  • CDs
  • Preliteracy toys and puzzles - limited, please check with children's library staff

Donations That Are Not Accepted

  • Books that are moldy or mildewed
  • Books that are damaged
  • Encyclopedias
  • Text books more than five years old
  • Magazines more than five years old
  • Readers Digest condensed books

What Happens to Materials That I Donate?

Materials that are donated go through a series of evaluations by library staff. Donated items may be utilized in the following ways:
  • Added to the library collection
  • Added to the bookmobile collection
  • Used as prizes in children's programs
  • Taken to area clinic waiting rooms as part of the Friends of the Library's Books for Children program
  • Placed in the library lobby book sale
